In this month of April at the Filipino Freelancer Academy, we’re discussing the freelancers’ work ethics that every Filipino freelancer should know - and do as well.
For people like us who work at home, we are free from corporate rules but there are moral rules/ethical rules we are expected to meet.
I believe that one of the keys to success in freelancing is having a good work ethic.
What is work ethics?
Work ethics is the attitude that you have and allows you to perform your tasks with positive moral values such as discipline, teamwork, integrity, and high quality.
A freelancer with a positive work ethic sets boundaries between work and personal stuff. Since you are working for yourself, you establish it and exercise it.
Work Ethics for Filipino Freelancers
#1 Punctuality & Time Management
Always be on time. I highly suggest to time in at least 10 minutes ahead if you’re working on a pre-established time.
If you’re working on project-based, make sure you are meeting your deadlines. It’s better if you can complete your projects a day before the deadline.
It’s important that you know how to manage your time especially if you have multiple clients.
#2 Honest & Transparency
Be honest and transparent with your client regarding how many tasks do you have at the moment and when is the best time that you can work for them.
Be true if you can’t do the tasks or if there’s anything vague on the instructions given. Don’t pretend that you know it all.
#3 Establish Clear Communication All the Time
There are different apps that we use to communicate with our clients in a timely manner - Slack, Skype, Whatsapp, Viber, and many more,
Always check in with your clients and team members especially if you are already starting your tasks. Remote working means you need to give extra effort for precise and consistent communication with your client.
#4 Value Confidentiality
As a freelancer, this is the most critical aspect of whether you sign an NDA - Non-Disclosure Agreement or not.
Make sure you don’t share your client’s confidential information like log-in details and other digital assets.
These are just some of the work ethics we need to keep in mind. If you have good work ethics in this kind of career, you’ll get a good reputation from clients, it’s likely that you’ll get referrals and you maintain healthy working relationships with all of your clients.
