If you want to become a virtual assistant but you don’t know how to begin from zero experience, here’s my simple but effective approach.

Steps To Become a Virtual Assistant this 2021
1. Write down your goals
You can’t get somewhere without knowing first what you want to achieve for your life and career.
Your life and career are integrated. You cannot work on the other without affecting the other one.
What do you want to achieve by being a virtual assistant?
Here are some goals of an aspiring virtual assistant;
a. To work at home so I can supervise my kids
b. To earn more than what I am making in my traditional employment
c. To have the flexibility to work on various clients
2. Research your niche
I know this topic isn’t exciting, but you can’t skip this part.
The freelancing industry is BIG, and you can’t barge in the industry by being a jack of all trade. You need to be a master of one thing.
How to know your niche;
A. Look at your previous employment - What department are you part of in your company? Sales? Marketing? Or Finance?
If you’re in marketing, you’ll be fine entering the digital marketing niche.
If you’re in finance, you can get started on bookkeeping.
B. You can also look at your passion or interest. Do you like social media? Do you like writing?
Your interest and passion can help you determine your niche.
3. Know what can you offer to your clients
Most of your potential clients would be online entrepreneurs. They are hiring virtual assistants to help them manage and grow their businesses.
What can you do to help them?
Make sure you are offering a solution to them to scale and grow their businesses.
4. Get your virtual assistant title
This one is connected to #3. Stop marketing yourself as a generic ‘virtual assistant.’
What kind of virtual assistant are you?
Are you a digital marketer? Or a customer service representative?
If you’re a nurse, label yourself as a healthcare virtual assistant.
If you’re a website developer, get a title like Web Development & Design Professional or a Web Development Expert.
Your title will give a hint of your expertise, and that will make it easier for clients to hire you.
5. Get a website
Now that you know what you’ll offer to your future clients, you’ll need a website to showcase your offering.
Don’t panic! You don’t need to spend a fortune on a. Website to start. You can create a free WordPress or Wix account.
6. Update your resume
Just like in traditional employment, you’ll need a resume when you are applying for any position.
Hear me on this, you’ll find potential clients wouldn’t be interested in what school you graduated from or any seminars you attended previously. Your potential clients will hire you because they see that you can do it.
The key is to tailor your resume based on the prospective client’s job.
Create multiple resumes for multiple jobs. It’s time-consuming, but it's worth it.
7. Be acquainted with virtual assistant tools
Working at home means you’ll be using remote tools and apps that are related to your job.
Make sure you are well-acquainted with time tracking apps, payment tools, and many more.
Again, research what you’ll be using as a virtual assistant and learn those tools. YouTube is a great place to learn about them.
8. Network with other virtual assistants
You don’t have to work alone. Networking with fellow virtual assistants has many benefits like job referrals, new friends, and a support group to help you have fun while working at home.

9. Be visible on social media
Did you know that my first client found me on Facebook? Yes, I didn’t apply.
So many potential clients are on social media looking for virtual assistants to help them. Make sure you have dedicated social media accounts for your virtual assistance career.
10. Start applying
Well, what are you waiting for? Start applying for jobs! When you earn your first client, you are an official virtual assistant already.
As you go through each step, you’ll learn and improve. Always be willing to learn and position yourself for success.
